Bittersweet, more commonly known as woody or climbing nightshade or felon-wood, is actually a flowering potato vine that is native to East Asia and Europe. It is a highly toxic plant but it also symbolizes friendly, platonic love. The Victorians saw the bittersweet flower as being truthful and honest. Even today, it is used for protection from evil spells as well as healing rituals.
