The name Moore appeared as a surname long before written language had developed in most of the population. The Irish for �Big� is �M�r� pronounced Moore. In the Irish language naming traditions, when a father and a son have the same name M�r and �g are used to differentiate, meaning "the Elder" and "the Younger" respectively. It can also mean "stately and noble" or dark-skinned: a Moor.
