Description
This image captures the essence and influence of Christianity as it continues to permeate the ruins of this once glorious Cistercian monastery. Once a humble washing facility for the monks, this lavabo is now the center of attention for visitors to Mellifont Abbey in Co. Meath, Ireland. Mellifont Abbey was founded in 1142 at the behest of St. Malachy. Mellifont was at the center of "European" monasticism in Ireland until the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. In 1690 Mellifont was used as headquarters for William of Orange during the Battle of the Boyne.
